The “F Word” in Home and Personal Care Products

The f wordin (1)

Nope, not that “F word”–but after reading this, you might be alarmed by this “F word” too.

“Fragrance” or (parfum) is a legal word in the industry that is used as an umbrella term to mask an untold number of chemicals.  It’s a bit of a trade secret.  If you see this word on your ingredient list in products, it could be hiding much more than you realize.

Phthalates, just one of the many chemicals legally hidden in the ingredient “fragrance,” are linked to birth defects, breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, autism, and ADHD.  This chemical is also categorized as an endocrine disruptor.

Did You Know 1
Our “Did You Know?” pamphlet guides you through becoming an ingredient detective.

Your endocrine system is responsible for the chemical processes in your body.  It is made up of the organs that secrete hormones to regulate the body’s growth, metabolism, and sexual development and function.  An endocrine disruptor becomes a problem for this system!  Our skin, the largest organ in our body, absorbs the items we put on it–which means we are also absorbing theses chemicals hidden in “fragrance.”

I know when I discovered this I ran around the house pulling out products and reading the labels.  Many of my FAVORITE daily products had fragrance in them (among other harmful ingredients)–and I wondered why my skin was breaking out, dry, and itchy!

You will never find “fragrance” in Pure Haven Essentials products, but you will find organic essential oils and other wonderful toxic free ingredients.  We are committed to product excellence.  The company website states:

“We use unadulterated essential oils, tested for purity, at recommended safe levels in combination with time-tested, beneficial botanical butters, powders, extracts, oils, and waxes, to create our well-loved line of safe products.

In designing and manufacturing our products, our best practices are guided by industry standards and regulating organizations, such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), The California Department of Public Health Safe Cosmetics Program, the European Union Cosmetics Directive, International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).”

We have made the switch in our home and have noticed a difference!  Here is what we have noticed:

  • Less asthma symptoms–I don’t need to use my inhaler nearly as often.
  • Less frequent common colds/illness–and I’m a teacher!
  • Awareness and sensitivity to artificial fragrances–your body is telling you something, folks!  Josh even mentioned today that someone used a very popular brand of cleaning supplies at work and he noticed he couldn’t even be in the room!

I’m here to help!  The first step is downloading our “Did You Know?” digital handout.  This is seriously a life-changing document!  It gives you a list of harmful ingredients that can be found in home and personal care products.  Then we can get you started living toxic free.
